Top 10 Feels when you find the right Therapist for you
Ok, so I know the word feels is so over-rated and it will probably be out of style next month but it's so fitting for describing all the feelings you feel when starting therapy! There are several Grand Rapids counselors with all different specialities and expertise, so how do you know when you've found the right one? Sometimes it can be overwhelming and you think, nah I can manage all of this stress, anxiety, sadness, pressure on my own, but you find yourself struggling to get through each day to the next. Taking the step into a counseling office can be nerve-wracking in itself! Here are some ways to rest assured in knowing that you've found the right counselor for you.
1. You instantly feel a sense of relief. As soon as you meet your counselor for the first time you should get a sense of "Ahh...finally someone is here to help me feel better". Sometimes personalities don't mesh and that's ok! There shouldn't be a sense of tension or conflict.
2. You don't have to explain yourself over and over again. Enough said. Even in blogging I don't want to write the same things over and over again, it's annoying! And you don't feel valued the first time you say {write} it.
3. You feel understood. You get a sense that your therapist just gets you. They make you feel like what you're going through makes complete sense. They are on your side.
4. You feel you can be yourself and express whatever is on your mind. You don't feel like you have to filter yourself or that your therapist is going to judge you.
5. You feel you can trust them. After a few sessions you feel like you can tell your therapist anything. You feel open to share your deepest fears and your therapist will gently hold them and help you get through it.
6. You feel comfortable in the counseling office space. The place you go for counseling should feel cozy, warm, and comforting. There's tea, coffee, water, comfy furniture, and tissues if needed!
7. You feel your therapist is knowledgeable. Your therapist should have education and a license to practice therapy. This should also come across in your sessions that your therapist knows what they're talking about.
8. Your therapist doesn't make you feel like something is wrong with you. It's hard enough coming to the conclusion that it's time for some extra support, let alone having someone else rub it in your face reminding you. Your therapist should be upfront and honest with you without making you feel 'crazy'.
9. You feel like your therapist not only listens, but also hears you. Ok so we've all had conversations with people that it feels like your talking to a brick wall. Like they're somewhere else in their own head, thoughts, or what they're going to say next. Your therapist should take the time to really listen to you and let you get out all of your words, and feels.
10. You feel better! The most important indicator that you've found the right therapist for you is that you feel better. Your therapist helps support and encourage you towards your goals in life to feel happier and healthier.
